"it is beyond my control"

I just watched Dangerous Liaisons (1988). It was stunning. Absolutely beautiful, seductive, tragic. Ever since I saw Cruel Intentions a while ago, I've always loved the story. (I have yet to get my hands on the novel! Nowhere seems to ever have it!)

The characters are perfect in my opinion. Although I think I'd prefer Ryan Phillipe's portrayal of the Vicomte/Sebastian, John Malkovich still played a very convincing role of the brooding seducer. And Glenn Close! She was brilliant as the Marquise! Every small change in her facial expression, ever slight tone in her voice, perfect. Uma Therman! I don't usually like her all that much or am indifferent to her. But she was adorable as Cecile and way more convincing than Selma Blair (though I like her too!). She was only eighteen at the time. I barely recognized her! She played innocent quite well.
Michelle Pfeiffer was stunning as well, beautiful, troubled, and virtuous all at once. Although the chemistry between her and Malkovich wasn't as strong for as was the Witherspoon/Phillipe chemisty, I have to be fair, as Witherspoon & Phillipe were head over heels in love at the time of Cruel Intentions.
And of course, how can anyone forget Keanu Reeves? Him as Danceny was spot on and very believable as the earnest, slightly impoverished music teacher.
Overall, this movie was a must see. Even if you're not a fan of historical dramas, you've got to see this. It's got the same seductiveness as Cruel Intentions, but maybe even more as everyone is in the most exquisite gowns and every last glance or twitch of the face is in perfect character. The gowns alone are reason to watch this film.

PS thank you so much, everyone, for bringing me into the double digits comment wise two posts in a row. You don't even know how pathetically happy it makes me =)

Agree with Sarah your blog is gorgeous! And I SO love this movie. I agree with you about Uma Thurman, she was so sweet and innocent in this movie and more beautiful than I've ever seen her. I also think Glen Close is wonderfull. If you like this movie you would also like the movie Valmont wich is based on the same story, with Colin Firth in the leading role. I personally prefer that one! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098575/

I love this movie! I actually liked it a lot more than Cruel Intentions. It just makes so much more sense set in that era than in the present.
